Meet Nicole

Surviving your 20s and standing on the edge of 30 years old causes most women to curl up on the floor in the fetal position. It’s ignited a new sense of adventure. I guess you could say that’s why I’m doing Dirty Girl. I enjoy dogsitting, traveling, wine and fancy beers, great restaurants and connecting people with each other.

Hello Dirty Girl.

Author: Nicole Schuman

I have never run a 5k.

I hate running.

I have no upper body strength.

I’ve called myself a ‘marshmallow just trying to make it in this world.’

I broke my arm by slipping and falling on the sidewalk when I was 10.

I honestly don’t have the best track record when it comes to athletics.

I love sports though. I’m an avid hockey fan, have watched the NFL and Buffalo Bills since I can remember. I can shoot hoops, and I’m not bad at it. I’m a decent swimmer and golfer. And I actually really like sweating through tennis.

But actual running? I HATE it.

I’m a control freak and like being able to control when I can start and stop my own misery and uncomfortableness.  Running? When you stop, it feels like
you have given up. That also makes me crazy.

But, I just lost my job and turning 30 soon, so why the hell not?

The sad part of this is, I’m currently not entirely doing it for the exercise, but for the opportunity to  explain my journey of pain and suffering through the written word. And for a new experience.

If I can connect with someone also going through a similar experience, feeling similar pain, then I’ve done my job.

So true Nicole, I’m right there with you. I’m not a runner by any means just looking for an adventure of my own. Good luck in NY!

    Hello Nicole,
I am running the 1pm wave in New York on 9/10.After some of my friends and I decided to do this,I downloaded the couch to 5K program listed on the dirty girl website because like you I am not a runner either.I was in the middle of week 3 and jogging 2 miles on the treadmill. On June 28th I decided to jog/walk the mile to the playground where my husband had taken the kids.Well, during that my right leg went numb.I thought I had over-stretched it and went home. The next day when I couldn’t walk on it I went to the emergency room where I was told I sprained my knee.Well,10 days later when there was no improvement I had an MRI done and it was discovered that I had broken my tibia plateau. That is where the tibia meets the knee.So I have been laid up since the end on June/July.I get re-x-rayed this Wed. I hope the dr tells me I am healed and even if I can’t jog the Dirty Girl I intend to walk it and do all of the obstacles if I can.I had every intention of building up my upper body strength and jogging for this but Things happen. No matter what I will participate because it is going to be a lot of fun and for a good cause.I wish you all the best in your dirty girl quest.

Hi Nicole. I’m not an athlete either. Last time I did any running was in high school, some 30 plus yrs ago. I’m doing this to challenge myself. I’ve been thru hell and back past 3 yrs with health issues and beating cancer (in remission now). Can’t get any worse. I want to reclaim my life! If it takes me all day to finish the course, than so be it. I’m in Wave 6 in NY. Can’t wait to let my doctors and oncologists know what I accomplish! I see them on 9/14/11! Good luck!

You are all so inspiring!!! Thank you for your stories! Hope to see you all at the finish line! @beth…sheesh! I hope I didn’t break anything! My foot just likes to go numb after about 15 minutes of running. I may try new shoes!

Hi Nicole. This will be my first go at this as well. I had been running, biking and weight training 5 days per week. However I recently go sick and have not done a thing in 8 weeks. Long illness. So now I run next Sat and I have decided that push, pull or drag I WILL finish this race. My initial goal was to run it all and have fun. Now my goal is to finish it and have fun. Good luck to all!!

    Get it, girrrrrrl!

You can definitely do this. I hate running, too. I just went for my first short run in a long time about an hour ago. It reminded me how hard it was when I first started running a few years ago. But, seriously, don’t give up. It gets easier, and you’ll start feeling like a champ when you accomplish small goals. I ran a half-marathon last year, simply because I wanted to prove to myself that I can do it.

You got this. Just keep running, even when your brain and body try convincing you to stop. It’s less about physically training than it is mentally training. That’s how I felt anyway. But the physical training does help ;)

    And stretch!

Wow, you read my mind. I am coming into my mid 40′s and being a mom of a 9 yr old. caregiver to my parents and running two households, why not run for me? I have a treadmill and can walk for hours and hours. Running maybe another matter. My cousin talked me into this and she is older than me, so we might be bringing up the rear but it will be great to say we did it and who knows maybe it will start something new in MY life to actually benefit ME and MY HEALTH. my whole family has health problems and i don’t want to end up the same way..
TO THE DIRT AND BEYOND………… (in the words of buzz lightyear) told you i was a mom. :D
